My Auntie Jo was a life force!

Created by Sarah 3 years ago

Auntie Jo must be one of the biggest characters in my childhood.  She sort of terrified me because she would say it how it was.   Auntie Jo was also totally fascinating and allowed me to do things that felt anarchic when I was little.   When I stayed for a week I was allowed to stay up a bit late and also watch Top of the Pops.   Probably given fun food and drink never allowed at home!

The whole Walton family felt very glamorous to me.   Three older girls to look up to especially when I was living in a totally male household (including the dog and cat!).  I was also given the clothes my cousins had grown out of.   These items were often matching but in different colours.   Took me years to work through all 3 sizes.

Auntie Jo and Uncle Wally had the kindest and softest of hearts.   Auntie Jo was with us on the day my mum died and I remember her being particularly brusque that morning but I later understood that was how she was trying to cope while struggling with her sadness.

The Waltons/Weber history is full of well known and funny memories.   Auntie Jo and Uncle Wally always arrived too early which threw my parents into a panic.  They always drove the wrong way when leaving our house and Auntie Jo would always roll her eyes to the ceiling when the boys started gong on about trains!  We went on walks and I was always at the back whining because I couldn't keep up.  Do you remember the thunderstorm on Penn Hill??  I think I was squealing!  The sun shone all the time in Gosport, and the Waltons were always brown.  Then there was the humiliating time I fell in the pond.

I wish I had spent more time with Auntie Jo in the last few years.   I know she was always interested in what we were up to.   We have two beautiful embroideries she made when Eddy and Isobel were born.   I really hope that, when we can, we will be better at spending time with the Waltons.   I think Auntie Jo would like that.

They say that people don't always remember the details about a person but you will always remember how they made you feel.   Auntie Jo is an unforgettable, larger than life, wonderful woman.

Much love,

Sarah
